IBMC College raises more than $600 for breast cancer awareness, research

October was Breast Cancer Awareness Month. IBMC College joined in on the national fight, on a local level, to combat the disease and raise awareness by holding fundraising activities and outreaches at nearby campuses in Fort Collins, Greeley, Longmont, Colorado Springs and Cheyenne, Wyoming. To date, $618 has been raised for the Susan B. Komen Foundation through IBMC’s efforts these last 31 days.

These are the fundraising and activities that took place in the month of October campus-wide:

  1. Students, staff and faculty were encouraged to wear jeans each Wednesday for a $1.00 donation. Additionally, individuals came together by wearing pink to support the cause.
  2. IBMC held a Pink Selfie Competition throughout the month, as well. Students gleaned pink ribbons and were asked to take a selfie, tag themselves and bring awareness to cancer through a variety of social media channels.
  3. The cosmetology and massage students offered specials in the campus clinics, including providing discounted massage services and pink gel manicures for $6.

In 1980, Nancy G. Brinker promised her dying sister, Susan, that she would do everything in her power to end breast cancer forever. In 1982, that promise became the Susan G. Komen Foundation and the beginning of a global movement. What was started with $200 and a shoebox full of potential donor names has now grown into the world’s largest nonprofit source of funding for the fight against breast cancer.

To date, the Foundation has invested more than $2.6 billion in groundbreaking research, community health outreach, advocacy and programs in more than 60 countries. Their efforts helped reduce death rates from breast cancer by 37 percent from 1990-2013, according to the website.
