The students and their instructor, Robin Morgan, traveled to The Sister Mary Alice Murphy Center, located at 242 Conifer St. in Fort Collins, where they gave each participating client of the Center a haircut, as well as a lending ear.
“The experience for them was beyond what (the students) ever expected,” Fort Collins Cosmetology instructor Robin Morgan stated in an email about the outreach. “They came back to the school more humbled and appreciative of what they have in life.”
According to The Center’s website, 17 independent agencies operate programs out of the Murphy Center — providing everything from core human needs, crisis intervention, as well as stabilization and self-sustainability services — with a collaborative mission to help our guests escape homelessness or prevent them from becoming homeless. Cosmetology students from the IBMC College Greeley campus volunteered in November 2016 at one of the Murphy Center’s partner agencies, Catholic Charities, providing free haircuts to at-risk veterans in the Fort Collins community.
“(I am) humbled and proud of the class,” Morgan said. “We are definitely ready to volunteer our time for the community more often.”
