A Massage Career Offers Vast Opportunities

Have you ever contemplated working in the healing arts? A massage career is a great choice for people who enjoy working with their hands, helping people and desire to work in a medical field.

U.S. News and World Report is famous for making lists and it’s a common source to find out the “best” of just about everything. The career of massage therapist made their 100 best jobs list at #62, and was #28 of all healthcare jobs.   Primarily, massage therapists get their occupational pride from the fact that they are able to make people feel physically better, and often mentally better, nearly every time they go to work. Besides this obvious perk, there are several reasons why this is a great choice for the right person.

The Job Offers Variety There’s a lot more to massage therapy than rubbing someone’s shoulders. There are several different types of massage to explore, including orthopedic, deep tissue, acupressure, sports massage, hot stone therapy, Swedish massage and more.

Massage Therapists Serve Diverse Clientele Massage therapists have a chance to meet a wide variety of people when they work. They work with athletes, business people, elderly people, those recovering from accidents, those who need stress relief and more. Each experience is different, and brings a new story.

It Doesn’t Take Forever to Become a Massage Therapist Rather than spending four or more years in college, a massage career may be obtained in as little as 15 months at IBMC College. The Massage Therapy Diploma program offers traditional medical and science courses on subjects such as medical terminology and various courses in anatomy and physiology. Students also complete a 5-week externship – allowing them to gain valuable experience providing massages to the public – prior to graduating from their program.

Massage Therapy Can Provide True Healing The aches, pains, and stiffness that builds up in people’s bodies from everyday life makes them more vulnerable to serious injuries with a lasting impact. Massage feels good because it puts things back the way they are supposed to be.  While doctors rush through 10-15 minute appointments, a massage appointment usually takes about an hour and often brings psychological benefits to the person simply because they are exposed to individual time and attention they may not even have realized they needed.

Investment in the Future While no specific training can guarantee a job, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Massage Therapy is a pretty good option for those who want to be able to work consistently. The projected employment growth in the field until 2022 is near 23% — much faster than normal. A certain amount of patience and compassion are necessary for a massage therapist, but for those who have what it takes it can be a very fulfilling career.
